Mission Statement

To empower underserved students to and through college and eradicate college access inequality

Description

Kamal Carter, an AP chemistry teacher at an underserved Atlanta public high school, faced the injustice of educational inequality daily. As a response, he created a "Lunch With A Mentor," a volunteer program that offered students real world educational experiences.

Debra Nealy, an educational advocate began volunteering with "Lunch With A Mentor." One day, one senior, not know where to start, asked for help accessing college. Debra Nealy, designed a college access strategy, mentored the student through the college admission process and helped him get accepted to his "best fit college" with a scholarship.

In 2010, based on the need they saw in the community, Ms. Nealy and Mr. Carter founded Step Ahead Scholars, a community-based college prep program that has evolved into a college access program that empowers students to and through college.

Step Ahead Scholars bridges the educational and opportunity divide by encouraging underserved students to live their lives with limitless opportunities through college access.

We believe all students should have access to the support, resources, and tools needed to pursue higher education, at their best fit school.

Through informational sessions, one-on-one mentoring, and community outreach initiatives, we increase the number of underserved students successfully navigating the college admissions and transition process.
