Mission Statement

The mission of Miners Hall Museum is to preserve and present authentic materials and artifacts that document the history of coal mining and its impact on Southeast Kansas, as well as to be a vital partner in the educational and cultural life of Southeast Kansas through its collections and programs.

Description

Using long-term and quarterly exhibits, Miners Hall Museum preserves and presents artifacts and information on the work, people, and culture of the coal-mining communities in this area. Exhibits include the history of immigration, coal-mining tools, conditions in the mines, education, social life, and medical treatment in the coal camps along with focused exhibits of the region’s history such as "The History of Quilting," and "Slovenes in Southeast Kansas".

Miners Hall Museum utilizes these quarterly and long-term exhibits to support its mission. We rely on an active volunteer program to help carry out our mission.

The museum provides educational opportunities throughout the community with a "Traveling Trunk" program for local organizations and schools that includes reproductions of artifacts and lesson plans for teachers to teach local history in a hands-on manner.

Our extensive research library is open to the public. It includes information on many of the small coal-mining camps that existed in the early twentieth century in Crawford and Cherokee counties in Southeast Kansas as well as information related to coal companies and coal miners.

MHM welcomes donations of artifacts and historical documents that help us expand and refresh our exhibits. We at MHM believe it is the museum’s duty to provide a space for this region to present its history and participate in its preservation.
