A REMOTE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!

Do you enjoy talking with others, leading small groups, or connecting with seniors? You can bring joy and social connectedness to vulnerable seniors during coronavirus by facilitating a senior chat group session!

Overview of Senior Chat Line:

Ensure seniors are not lonely by breaking up their day. The Senior Chat Line is a semi-structured group phone call. Seniors call in to the chat line Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 12:00 - 1:00pm. A facilitator leads the chat with a small group of seniors on the call by using a curriculum provided each week to the facilitators. The curriculum includes some educational material, a word of the day, and anything from riddles to poems.

Volunteer Position Summary:

A Senior Chat Line facilitator will use the provided curriculum to lead a chat line conversation with seniors that call in. The facilitator must be able to lead the conversation while sometimes allowing a free-flow to happen. You must be flexible, willing to listen and learn from the callers, and be an all around good communicator.

Tasks:

  • Review the curriculum provided for the Chat Line and present the information to the callers.
  • Lead and facilitate a call using Zoom.
  • (desired but not a must) Create new chat line content.

Qualification & Skills:

High school diploma. Experience working with diverse populations of seniors and/or experience volunteering in human services or other related organizations.

The volunteer should be:

  • Personal, warm, and friendly
  • Confident leading an activity with seniors
  • Comfortable talking with individuals on the phone
  • Comfortable using technology such as Zoom

Location & Time:

  • From the convenience of your own home!
  • Senior chat line is 12:00 - 1:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The volunteer can sign up for any dates they are available to facilitate.

Training and Supervision:

There is a required 1-hour training and volunteers can "listen-in" on one Senior Chat Line call prior to facilitating their own Senior Chat Line. Ongoing support and training would be provided by an IFW Senior Service staff.

Screening:

This volunteer position does require a background check prior to starting the assignment
