Let's Take a Walk on the Beach!

Today is the Day to Make a Difference and start your new adventure. Retirement means every day is bosses day (You are the new boss) and every day is Employee Appreciation Day! Add a dash of volunteer appreciation and we have a trifecta for you!

You are looking for just the right opportunity to put your energy to good use without a heavy duty commitment. Well, this is the opportunity and this is the day to make a difference in your life and that of a neighbor. With just an hour or two per week you can be a friendly visitor, a shopping buddy or a reader for a neighbor who is legally blind. Interested but not nearby? Give me a call because there are new friends waiting for you in other towns too - probably five to seven miles from your house.

Requirements to be a great volunteer include:

  • a desire to help others;
  • a pleasant demeanor;
  • a good reading/speaking voice;
  • average reading skills;
  • organizational or planning abilities;
  • a good driving record;
  • a clear criminal history;
  • two references
  • access to a car with proof of insurance;
  • a minimum of $50/100k liability and $5,000 of property damage coverage.

Volunteers will be matched within three to five miles of home or work but will need to make a one-time visit to BESB’s Windsor office for an interview and sighted guide training.

Today is the day to call 800-842-4510 x4129 or email lori.st.amand@ct.gov for your Services for the Blind volunteer application. You will make a difference and you will make a friend!
