As you make plans for your summer, I hope you will consider carving out one or two hours between June 24 to July 31 to help fight childhood hunger in your neighborhood. Since 2010 our organization, Take Action INC-- now transitioning to Blessings in a Backpack Northwest Oregon Chapter--has been filling backpacks with food each weekend of the school year at over 50 schools in Northwest Oregon. We currently serve over 2,000 students each week. Hunger impacts children in many ways and is an issue in our community now more than ever before. We use your local Grocery Outlet store as our primary source of food to feed these children. They provide amazing pricing, service, and easy access to nutritious food. Each July, Grocery Outlet stores host a fundraising event, designed to help fight hunger in our area. Your local Grocery Outlet store has agreed to dedicate all they raise this year to our organization. 100% of funds raised at this event will feed the children in our program--the children in your neighborhood. Store greeters make a big difference in how much we raise, and we believe that having you help us by welcoming shoppers outside of local Grocery Outlet stores can raise even more dollars. Signing up for a time slot to safely stand outside of your local store and ask customers to donate at checkout can help us feed more children than ever before during the 2020-2021 school year. Our Vision:
Every school-aged child in America has the nourishment needed to learn and grow. As a leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings in a Backpack strives to ensure children do not go hungry on the weekends by empowering individuals and communities to take action.
Why Do We Do It
More than 13 million children in this country are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Federal government programs feed children during the school week, but we also want to ensure they get nutritional meals over the weekend.
How Much Does it Cost?
$150 will feed one child on the weekends for one 36-week school year through the Blessings in a Backpack program. The Results: Nourished Kids Ready to Learn.
Food is an essential building block; in this case, it truly is a blessing, especially to a hungry child!
