With schools closing, Bridges to Independence's youth are at home all day and, as I'm sure we've all experienced, this creates a bit of boredom. To help keep their boredom at bay, while keeping their minds engaged, Bridges to Independence is asking for help in the form of activity bundles! We call them: Anti-Boredom Bundles!

Since we are trying to engage them, it is best if the activity is hands on! Some ideas for the hands-on activities include making rain clouds, elephant toothpaste, glow in the dark jellyfish, DIY bouncy balls, glitter bottles, DIY terrariums, rainbow paper, or egg geodes. These are just some examples, we welcome any creative ideas you may have!

Each bundle would have the supplies needed, instructions, and preferably an educational lesson that compliments the activity, but the lesson is not required. Although we do ask you to have all supplies, we do understand it may be hard to gather the amount of colored pencils, markers, or glue sticks need for each bundle. If you find you cannot gather the amount of supplies such as coloring utensils of any types, glue, or notebooks, let me know and we may have enough at the shelter to cover anything missing.

Our goal is to have enough bundle so each child in the shelter has an activity! This ensures that no one feels left out when they see others get a bundle. We will let you know how many youth are in the shelter at the time you choose to do this bundle. If you have any questions, please email Celeste at cmckenzie@bridges2.org to find out more!

We have socially distant drop off bins outside of our shelter to allow for a safe drop off of all bundles once you have completed them to keep everyone safe and healthy! Although there is an address listed, you are able to do this opportunity remotely.

If you are looking to receive verified volunteer hours for this, we will verify up to 6 hours for each set of bundles.

About Bridges To Independence

Location:

Mission Statement

Bridges to Independence leads individuals and families out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. We offer a continuum of aid and support for all family members, helping them attain financial security and move forward into self-sufficiency. A private, nonprofit organization, Bridges has been working with and for families experiencing homelessness since 1985, when we were founded as the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless.

Description

In a nutshell, "what we do" is build bridges to independence for homeless families and families at risk of becoming homeless. Our bridges - our services - strengthen these families and provide them with the stability, skills, knowledge, and community networks to become self-sufficient. We offer supports for every family member - adults and children alike. Our short-term goal is to help individual clients right now. Long-term, we aim to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty by preparing today’s struggling kids to be tomorrow’s successful adults. From housing to financial literacy, from tutoring to youth development, from life skills to career counseling, we tailor a continuum of services. Some activities are required, some are optional, and some are just plain fun.
