Lantern Community Services

  • 6 people are interested

Lantern Community Services is an organization that champions the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who were formerly homeless or have recently aged out of foster care through supportive housing. Our programs - which have proven results in health, employment, education and life skills - are delivered inside our residences and tailored to each person’s needs.

In encouraging the personal and professional growth of residents at Lantern, we are looking for a tutor to help residents qualify and pass the NEDP test. The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) is an applied performance assessment system that assesses the high school level skills of adults and out-of-school youth. Many of our residents have started to prepare on their own but need help to complete this demanding goal.

We are currently looking for a volunteer who can tutor Mondays from 10:00am to1:00pm via Zoom. The primary focus will be on building math skills up to a 7th grade level. We would love to find a volunteer who can proactively create lessons for clients as they work through their course materials.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions if you are interested in this position!

About Lantern Community Services

Mission Statement

Lantern Community Services champions the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who have been impacted by or threatened with homelessness, as well as those who have aged out of foster care.

Lantern is home to more than 1,400 formerly homeless people who live in our 15 apartment buildings across New York City. We pioneered services for people living with HIV, and we are one of the largest providers for young adults who have aged out of foster care. We give people more than just basic support and a place to live, prioritizing interventions with scientifically proven results. We’ve grown our programs a lot recently, working creatively with our existing resources, but now we need volunteer power to bring more programs to more of our clients!
