As oxygen is going to be in short supply, for the treatment of the Covid 19 virus, just as ventilators and medical staff will be, we need to be thinking about how we might supply supplementary oxygen. What we are looking to do is produce an increased concentration of oxygen at the lowest and most transportable cost possible. More likely than not this will be by way of membrane filter technology whereby atmosphere is pressurised and pushed through a membrane filter. The primary components will be tubes, valves, filters a pump, the important membrane filter and storage facility. The size would most likely look like a 50 mm tube 500 mm long to supply the maximum amount of oxygen to a patient. The filters are extremely long-lasting and only need compressed air.

The mission is to design and build low cost and small Ventilators in vast numbers. We might want to think about only running a maximum of 50% oxygen. That would halve the size of everything including the price. We could probably get by on very low cost compressors similar to a good quality big aquarium compressor. The pressure can go up to 12 bar but if we were satisfied with a slightly lower pressure we could use plastic plumbing fittings. The next thing to source a suitable membrane cartridge filter. The nitrogen can be cleared to atmosphere. What about the Argon, does that do with the oxygen or stay with the nitrogen?

We have already been working on a low cost ventilator and need an equally low-cost oxygen generator or concentrator of some type to complement this treatment protocol.

A ventilator from first principles to increase the accumulated chances of survival in the COVID-19 Crisis


We are a non-profit charitable trust aiming to produce a low-cost Ventilator and distribute it for a "What you see fit" price around the world to those who need it the most. Our Ventilator is different from other emergency Ventilators in that it will be controllable over the Internet, with the medical professional observing the Patient over a phone camera, thus reducing viral load on the medical professionals at the front line, enabling those in stable countries to help and allowing one doctor to have an overview over many patients. Using latest technology, we seek to harvest the connectivity of our Ventilator to gather vast amounts of data to identify effective treatment patterns and automize as much of the treatment as possible, releasing pressure from overwhelmed facilities.

Version 1 of the Ventilator software is now in testing and we are working on the communication protocols and circuitry. Parts cost are currently less than 80$ but are estimated to rise to 150$

Our roadmap consists of 4 Versions which can be deployed over the internet. It is envisaged that the Ventilator will be assembled by qualified volunteers, go through centralized quality control and then distributed to places of greatest needs on an international basis. Once enough funding is raised, a part of the workload will be outsourced to specialized companies.
