Help bring the brain-building power of books to Minnesota families!

Reach Out and Read Minnesota is a nonprofit organization that seeks to give children a foundation for success through the powerful effects of reading and sharing a story with a loved one. We work with doctors and nurses across the state to provide books to young children during their routine pediatric care and educate and empower families to read together to boost their children's development.

Currently we are in need of some assistance to process and sort book orders and book donations at our book storage facility located at the M Health Fairview clinic in Columbia Heights. The current pandemic and economic conditions have limited our regular resources to help distribute books to our families, but we know that families need books and home learning resources now more than ever! Your assistance would help us make sure each family has the resources they need to help keep their child's learning on track!

Volunteer duties may vary due to ability, preference, and need, but generally would include: sorting donated books into age and content categories, removing inappropriate books from donations, receiving and sorting new book orders, preparing new books for shipment, and packaging other learning materials for shipment.

Volunteers are expected to follow social distancing norms while at the storage facility in order to protect themselves and others.

Mission Statement

We seek to give young children a foundation for success through the powerful effects of reading and sharing a story with a loved one. We do this by incorporating books into children's routine pediatric care visits and encouraging families to read together.

Description

Reach Out and Read builds on the unique and influential relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early parent-child book-sharing routines, beginning in the infant and toddler years. Research shows that Reach Out and Read successfully prompts families to read together more often, such that children served in clinics that participate in the program, develop stronger language expression and comprehension skills.

Reach Out and Read Minnesota serves over 175,000 Minnesota children through nearly 300 participating clinics.
