We had a vision of a garden tended by locals to feed the hungry in Montgomery County. Madison Fields, a 400-acre agricultural resource center whose programs benefit people of all ages and abilities, agreed to host our garden and greenhouse.
And we are growing!
Come join us. Get your hands dirty. Smell a tomato flower. Help a pea tendril find its way. Pick some fresh corn. Help us nurture the garden (water, weed, harvest) and pack up fresh veggies to get them to people in need. (Plus you can take a few veggies home with you!) Opportunities for scheduled volunteer visits are available on Mondays and Thursday, 8:30-1:30.
Volunteer Responsibilities include:
Weeding: Pulling all of the unwanted plants out of the ground so our wanted plants can grow stronger. It's just as fun as it sounds! There is nothing more satisfying than looking back at your work after a chunk of time weeding.
Watering: Hand watering the plants so they can stay healthy in the summer heat and help them produce the yummiest food they can.
Harvesting: Learn how to harvest all different kinds of produce like broccoli, lettuce, squash, tomatoes and so many more. It’s a great way to see first hand where your food comes from and understand different plant life cycles!
Rinsing/ Packaging: After the food is harvested we weigh, rinse, and package it so we can donate it to local food banks and families in need.
