Puppy Haven is comprised of a team of young women who are passionate about dogs and people. Our adoption counselors play a vital role on the PHR Team, and as we grow in size, we need more help to ensure adopting remains a smooth and rewarding experience for both parties.
We are looking for someone who has a heart for people and dogs, and would be willing to donate their time to assist our adoption counselors and, with time, possibly join our team.
The main focus of this volunteer position will be to assist the adoption counselors with the adoption process & adoption day (on Saturday) - assisting prospective families at events (TBD due to COVID-19), educating new adopters, follow up with adopters after adoptions or sleepovers, and assisting with admin tasks.
WHAT YOU WOULD DO:
*New volunteers would not begin by doing all tasks. The adoption counselors will determine level of responsibility.
- Assist adoption counselors with daily tasks (most can be done remotely)
- Help with weekly adoption days
- Create a comfortable environment for the adopters to ask questions
- Follow up with adopters on finishing vaccines/spay/neuter for their puppy
- Check in with adopters to see how things are going with their new dogs
- Attend monthly adoption events (TBD due to COVID-19)
- Greet prospective adopters
- Answer questions
- Match people to dogs
- Review adoption applications Mon-Wed
- Collect adopter information after adoption days & send to data entry team for processing
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills in order to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
- Excellent writing skills
- Can manage multiple tasks at once
- Be able to learn our databases and complete adoption paperwork
- Be able to go through adoption packets with adopters
EXPECTATIONS:
- Willing and committed to working well with adoption team and staff in all roles
- Contribute to the success of PHR by being an active, friendly and professional volunteer
- Be a problem solver
- Must be able to work around animals (including diseased, injured, and/or potentially aggressive animals), loud noises, chlorine or other chemicals
- Must be willing to work during inclement weather, and evening and weekend work
This would be more involved and long-term than a typical volunteer position, but would be great for those who are looking to build their skills in the field. We are more than happy to sign for service hours and/or write letters of recommendations.
