We are searching for a Vigil Volunteer who will provide social and emotional care to terminally ill patients in the active stages of dying. The support must be provided in a non-judgmental manner that honors the spiritual needs of the patient/family. The volunteer must have knowledge of the dying process and understanding of when clinical intervention is needed. We are looking for a volunteer who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and focused on the comfort of the patient.

Responsibilities (include, but not limited to):
* Maintain a safe environment for patient during the visit.
* Visits patients in their homes, nursing homes, assisted living facility, personal care home, or inpatient unit to offer conversation, respite, and assistance.
* Provides physical presence and emotional support in whichever setting patient is residing when patient is in the active stages of dying or transition.
* Calls for clinical support if patient shows signs or symptoms of pain OR if death appears imminent.
* Act as a comforting presence for patients who are unable to respond during visits.
* Demonstrate understanding of and adherence to professional Codes of Ethics and related organizational policies.
* Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
* Understands and adheres to the Sacred Journey Hospice, Inc. vision and Organizational Philosophy, and advocates its philosophy.

Hospice is living with quality end of life care. Our organization is for patients with many types of illnesses. While about half of our patients have some sort of cancer, a large segment of our patients have cardiac and respiratory disease, renal disease, neurological illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease, Lou Gehrig's disease, AIDS, cirrhosis and other terminal diseases.

  • The Vigil Volunteer position is generally a once a week, 4-hour commitment agreed upon between the volunteer and coordinator. We are flexible!
  • Must complete Vigil Volunteer training. Must have reliable transportation, driver's license, and auto insurance.
