Vecinos Unidos, a 501(c)(3) in Herndon, VA, is seeking a dedicated volunteer to serve on its board of directors and be responsible for coordinating academic work for the students who attend its afterschool program. The candidate we seek should have an education background, ideally K-6, and will serve on the board of directors as a curriculum coordinator, using various resources to create packets of work and activities for the children in the program and communicating with schools when possible to support reading comprehension, basic and grade-level math skills, logic problems, and other appropriate academic skills. Vecinos Unidos operates 4 days a week from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Children, all students in Herndon elementary schools, receive a healthy snack and milk, work on homework or academics, read aloud to a volunteer for 20 minutes, respond to writing prompts, and enjoy other activities as time allows.
Vecinos Unidos has been working in the Herndon community for 23 years to help children in grades 1-6 with their homework, reading, and other academic skills. Enrollment is between 20-30 students, most of whom live in families where English is not the first language. Attendance each session is 8-14 students. VU is housed in the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center, where it has an office and access to classrooms. A volunteer board of 8-10 members guides the program and provides onsite support for each session, and a cadre of 30-40 volunteers work with the children. When children do not have homework, which has become increasingly the norm in the lower grades, we want to provide suitable work to enhance their learning.
The successful candidate will have an interest in helping low-income children live up to their full potential via improving basic learning skills. The Curriculum Coordinator will do most work off-site, but will need to attend the program twice a week or so at least at the beginning. Please contact us for more specific information.
