Background:
The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. The Atlanta office resettled more than 1,000 refugees in 2016. Staff provide numerous program services to assist refugees from their arrival through citizenship.

Intern Overview:
The Reproductive Health Intern, under the supervision of the Reproductive Health Educator and Advocates for Youth Coordinator, is responsible for assisting and supporting programming for the Youth Leadership Team and Reproductive Health outreach. The IRC in Atlanta, as part of a national collaborative effort with Advocates for Youth and two other collaborating organizations, will develop referral/linkage models between health centers and youth serving organizations that may be replicated in communities across the U.S.

Scope: The Reproductive Health Intern provides direct support to facilitate bi-monthly youth leadership team meetings that will focus on designing a youth friendly clinic environment. The Reproductive Health Intern will also support the Reproductive Health Educator with community outreach and sustaining existing community partnerships.

Responsibilities:
Work directly with the Reproductive Health Educator and Advocates for Youth Coordinator to support planning and execution of the Youth Leadership Team meetings
Take an active role in assisting with group facilitation and youth empowerment activities, client outreach, documenting facilitator’s notes and curriculum
Attend and participate in community outreach events to promote IRC and Oakhurst Medical Clinic family planning services and support YLT members with engaging community partners.
Update and maintain reproductive health data collection about community partnerships and ongoing activities.
Support Reproductive Health Educator with reproductive health lessons by assisting with setting up and organizing presentations, research activities and exercises for reproductive health lessons, and assist with group facilitation.
Ensure timely and accurate compliance with all reporting and documentation of services
Providing general administrative and logistics support and transporting clients
Other duties as needed and assigned by Reproductive Health Educator and Advocates for Youth Coordinator

Learning Objectives:
1.Learn about youth-adult partnerships and access to sexual and reproductive health services through a reproductive justice and client-centered framework.
2.Develop effective rapport building, interpersonal communication and cultural competency skills specific to working with refugee populations.
3.Support youth leadership team meetings and facilitate activities that foster youth engagement and empowerment.
4.Empower refugee youth to serve as leaders, decision-makers and change-agents in encouraging access to sexual and reproductive health services.
5.Learn about developing community partnerships and educate women on family planning services and access.

Intern Requirements:
Must be willing and flexible to work varied hours including weekends as assigned
Experience working with diverse populations including immigrants or refugees or in social service preferred
Experience working with youth or in group facilitation
Creativity and initiative to follow-through with projects
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Access and Word, E-mail, Excel) required
Must be well-organized, reliable, professional, detail oriented and flexible and should have strong communications skills
Desire to work as a team member and in a multicultural workplace
Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly preferred but not required.
