FORA is dedicated to empowering refugees through education. We welcome all refugees into our center but most of our current students are Rohingya Muslims from Burma who have arrived here in the US after escaping genocide. When they arrive in the US, these kids are placed in the grade-level appropriate to their age, even though they may never have attended regular school before. The kids face multiple challenges but the lack of language access is one that really hinders them from fitting in and succeeding in their new environment. At FORA, we bridge this disconnect by providing intensive instruction in reading and math so that our students will be prepared to participate fully in US civic and economic society. In response to the pandemic, we have transitioned to remote instruction, and the difficulties faced by the refugee community in this crisis has led us to expand our services to reach more students. Our ability to take on more students depends on volunteers like you!

We are looking for volunteers who want to commit an hour every day for a virtual one-on-one tutoring session with newly arrived refugee students till the end of December. We are looking for dedicated and kind people who are enthusiastic about working with children! We have students from K-12 and we will pair each volunteer with a student that they can tutor and build a relationship with. We have online tutoring tools and experienced tutors who will guide you through the process. High school students are welcome to apply as long as they have an adult willing to supervise them. What these kids need more than anything is someone who believes in them and wants to invest in them.

Your presence and an hour of your day can change a kid's life!

Mission Statement

Our vision is a world where migrants in need are welcomed and empowered. Our mission is to ensure that refugee families are provided access to an education sufficient to prepare them to become economically self-sufficient and robustly engaged in American civic life. Our strategy is to be located in the neighborhoods that we serve to make daily educational services easily available to newly-arrived refugees.

Description

Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA) is a not-for-profit organization that empowers refugees by providing them with the educational resources needed to make a successful transition to the United States.

Due to the pandemic, we have shifted to providing online tutoring to 50 recently-arrived K-12 refugee students with a 1-to-1 student-tutor ratio. We provided intensive after-school tutoring for 30 recently-arrived K-12 refugee students with a 2-to-1 student-tutor ratio for two hours a day before the pandemic. We have been able to take on more kids and expand our services with the help of volunteers. Our curriculum is designed and implemented by a Ph.D. in child development.

All services are free. We currently have a long waiting list of students needing our services. Our ability to take on more students depends on volunteers!
