Brighter Bites is a nonprofit that delivers fresh fruits and vegetables directly into families’ hands.

Since schools shut down in March, Brighter Bites transitioned to completely outdoor, contactless, drive-thru distributions. At many sites, they allow walkers to pick up and have a contactless process for them as well. Brighter Bites has started distributing near 5,000 pre-packed produce boxes per week across 9 distribution locations. They need your help to continue to continue to provide as many of our neighbors as possible with fresh produce.

Food will be distributed at Turner Roberts Recreation Center. This opportunity is available every Friday beginning June 4 and extending until at least July 30; 6/5, 6/12, 6/19, 6/26, 7/10, 7/9, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31. All shifts begin at 8:30 AM and go until 12:30 PM or until there is no more food left to distribute.

Volunteers must be willing to stand and walk for extended periods of time, wear mask and gloves for their entire shift and staying 6ft apart from others at all times. Staff will take your temperature when you arrive and conduct a safety & process orientation to all volunteers. Hand sanitizer, gloves, masks (if you don’t bring your own) and water will be provided. All activities are performed outdoors, so please dress accordingly. You will be responsible for putting food in vehicle trunks or setting it on a table for pick up. Please be 16 or older. Under 16 can participate if they have an adult guardian volunteering as their partner for the entire shift.

About engAGE Travis County

Mission Statement

engAGE Travis County provides pathways to aging well for people 50+, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through volunteering, education, advocacy, and partnerships with public agencies and community organizations.

Description

One of our core programs, RSVP is part of the federal AmeriCorps Seniors program and was founded locally in 1972. Last year more than 17,100 Americans of all ages and backgrounds united to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and expand opportunity through national service in Texas. AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers served at more than 2,400 locations across Texas, including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations.

Those who benefit from the work performed by engAGE Travis County and RSVP volunteers include the full spectrum of people from birth to old age, including homeless or isolated people with acute, chronic or terminal illnesses; frail homebound seniors; low-income families; teen mothers; disaster victims; at-risk youth; veterans; people with physical, mental or learning disabilities; and seniors in nutrition programs.

Help your community by offering your unique skills and talents. We’ll recommend ongoing and short-term volunteer opportunities based on your skills and interests, but the choice of where you volunteer and what you do is entirely yours. The benefits of being a volunteer (aged 50 and over) are numerous: travel reimbursement, on-duty accident and liability insurance, life-long learning opportunities, social engagement, recognition, and greetings throughout the year.
