Importance: Adult clients come to the Adult Education Center (AEC) because they want to further their education and/or receive job-readiness training and employment counseling; attaining these goals is often life-changing for participants. Volunteers contribute greatly to ECS's ability to provide free educational services to low-income adults. The clients we serve are adults who bring their own knowledge and experiences to the student/tutor relationship. Volunteers who work with these adult students enrich the student’s experience, which in turn provides a and rewarding experience for the volunteer participants, who are able to observe the student’s growth firsthand and build a meaningful relationship with someone in need.

Description:

A volunteer with the AEC serves as tutor and/or mentor to adults.

  • In distance learning, this is done via email, phone, and video conferencing.
  • Volunteers make a commitment of at least once-a-week for one hour for at least three months.
  • Volunteers have weekly check-ins with an AEC instructor.
  • Tutoring is done in secondary-level subjects and/or job-readiness curriculum, as well as assistance with resume writing, job search, and interview preparation, according to each volunteer's preference and areas of expertise. Subject areas and descriptions are detailed below.
    • Resume writing (providing tutoring and resume assistance remotely, based on ECS’s Employment Specialist curriculum)
    • Interview skills (anticipating questions and conducting mock interviews remotely)
    • Job-readiness skills (tutoring students remotely who are taking these courses)
    • Language arts
    • Math
    • Additional high school subjects

Needed skills:

  • Compassion, patience, and respect
  • Experience working in or familiarity with adult education, and/or ability and openness to learn
  • Ability to uphold commitment
  • Willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of subject matter

*Please note that all volunteer tutors must be fingerprinted to ensure the safety of our clients. Thank you!

Population Served by the AEC:

AEC students are a diverse group; some have been chronically homeless, while others are experiencing recent struggles with employment and housing, and still others are re-entering society from being incarcerated. Their ages range from 18 to seniors. Our clients experience barriers to their education and advancement that include unaddressed learning differences, some developmental and physical challenges, cyclical poverty, discrimination, lack of access to education and employment opportunities, and some mental health issues. We meet clients where they are, providing individualized educational services, and work with them to formulate a goal-oriented plan that contains realistic steps to help them reach their potential.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to help homeless and very low-income people every day and night obtain the housing, jobs, shelter and essential services each person needs to prevent and end homelessness.

Description

Episcopal Community Services (ECS) has provided essential services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in San Francisco since 1983, utilizing a holistic approach that addresses the multiple causes leading to homelessness. This past year, we served more than 13,000 people, guided by our mission to help homeless and very low-income people every day and every night obtain the housing, jobs, shelter, and essential services each person needs to prevent and end homelessness.
The complex nature of homelessness calls for a multi-faceted solution. ECS serves adults and children through a range of services, including the City’s Adult Coordinated Entry (ACE), supportive housing, employment and education programs, healthy aging, information and referral resources, reentry housing and support services, interim housing, and behavioral health services.
