The goal for the EveryStep Community Garden is to provide fresh nutritious food for families, employees and volunteers and maintain a garden where a group of diverse individuals can gather and work together for the common good. One of our goals is to educate our clients on providing nutritious food for their families, explore ways to use the garden as a relaxation, exercise and best of all enjoy the great outdoors!

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the growing season of 2020 will consist of managing a small vegetable and herb garden where routine help will be needed. Assistance is requested with weeding, watering, harvesting, and distributing the produce to clients throughout the Des Moines Metro Area. The committee is also looking for new members to help grow and expand the garden to increase its impact in the community.

The EveryStep Community Garden will be expanding in the growing season of 2021 with an additional garden area near the west parking lot with climbing vegetables like squash, pumpkins and beans. In addition, the garden will be incorporating the United Way’s literacy program and Stork’s Nest classes with education on how to prepare meals with the vegetables that are home grown in our backyard and how to get kids interested in all that our Mother Earth has to offer. We will be utilizing the playground that is on the EveryStep facilities as part of furthering their explorations of activities that the kids can do outside besides gardening. We would like your expertise on how to make our goals a reality and to assist in maintaining our garden. As you know, there is a lot to do in a garden such as weeding, watering and picking the fresh produce for delivery to our clients, families and volunteers.

2020 growing season has tomatoes (multiple varieties), peppers (hot, mild and regular), carrots, green beans, green onions, varieties of lettuce, Kale, potatoes, cucumbers, Basil, thyme, chives, rosemary, and mint.
