Keep Austin Together is a program providing prepared meals through the Supplemental Emergency Food Access Network to address food security needs for people who are unable to prepare their own meals and have been impacted by the COVID 19 pandemic. In the five weeks since the Keep Austin Together prepared meals program started, it has provided more than 21,500 prepared meals for free, across 18 different local nonprofits, to many of the most vulnerable people in Travis County.

They currently have a renewed need for volunteers to assist their cooks and chefs, and to help their partner organizations distribute meals to individuals.

Shifts are available immediately through the end of June at two locations. Shifts for the Cook’s Nook, located at 502 Thompson Lane are Sunday through Thursday from 12 to 2 PM. Shifts for RPM Kitchen located in the Springdale General Complex, 1023 Springdale Rd Building 1, Suite 1 are available Sunday through Thursday from 5-7 PM.

Volunteers must be 18 (16 and up permitted with adult supervision), be willing to wear a mask and gloves, wear closed toe shoes, practice social distancing recommendations and stand for lengthy periods of time.

Mission Statement

engAGE Travis County provides pathways to aging well for people 50+, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through volunteering, education, advocacy, and partnerships with public agencies and community organizations.

Description

One of our core programs, RSVP is part of the federal AmeriCorps Seniors program and was founded locally in 1972. Last year more than 17,100 Americans of all ages and backgrounds united to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and expand opportunity through national service in Texas. AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers served at more than 2,400 locations across Texas, including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations.

Those who benefit from the work performed by engAGE Travis County and RSVP volunteers include the full spectrum of people from birth to old age, including homeless or isolated people with acute, chronic or terminal illnesses; frail homebound seniors; low-income families; teen mothers; disaster victims; at-risk youth; veterans; people with physical, mental or learning disabilities; and seniors in nutrition programs.

Help your community by offering your unique skills and talents. We’ll recommend ongoing and short-term volunteer opportunities based on your skills and interests, but the choice of where you volunteer and what you do is entirely yours. The benefits of being a volunteer (aged 50 and over) are numerous: travel reimbursement, on-duty accident and liability insurance, life-long learning opportunities, social engagement, recognition, and greetings throughout the year.
