ORGANIZATION: CAMP UNITY EASTSIDE

Since 2012, Camp Unity Eastside has provided safe shelter and support for homeless adults, in a community setting, while they are working to regain stability.

We are looking for committed Board Members to serve on Camp Unity Eastside’s governing body. The Camp Unity Eastside (CUE) Board of Directors (BOD) are non-paid volunteers who help to achieve Camp Unity’s mission, support camp operations, and oversee camp management.

The Board Member’s responsibilities include advising on plans, evaluating alternatives, and actively working to meet the needs of (CUE). We are seeking candidates to fill two Board Member positions.

To be successful as a Board Member you should be a good listener and communicator, be resourceful in working through solutions, be patient with people and processes. An outstanding Board Member will be committed to the CUE mission and be passionate about helping people in need. General Board Member Responsibilities:

  • Know the CUE mission, CUE procedures and rules.
  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing the agenda and supporting documentation.
  • Respond in a timely manner to CUE and BOD communications.
  • Regularly attend board meetings and participate actively and conscientiously.
  • Participate in the evaluation of CUE operations.
  • Keep up with CUE and board communications
  • Participate in fund raising activities.
  • Contribute to the development of new procedures or solutions to issues.
  • Vote on budgets and proposed actions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personal information about people staying at CUE.
  • Act as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization.

Other Responsibilities shared by the Board:

  • Prepare and submit Temporary Use Permits applications with the jurisdiction that CUE will be moving to in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a schedule of churches and other faith communities that will host the CUE encampment.
  • Contact faith community leaders to discuss hosting CUE.
  • Provide prospective hosts with information about hosting CUE.
  • Debrief hosts following a CUE stay and provide a thank you.
  • Help coordinate volunteers during a camp move.
  • Visit CUE periodically to check in and learn about camp needs.
  • Periodically attend the weekly Camp Supervisor and General Camp meetings on Monday nights.
  • Help the board resolve needs by conducting research as needed such as to replace or repair camp equipment.
  • Order replacement camp equipment (with board approval).
  • Assist with the logistics of moving CUE including arranging for moving truck rentals.

Board Member Requirements:

  • Have sufficient time available for board duties (15-20 hours per month)
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Comply with the CUE By-Laws and other guidance documents.
  • Strong connections in the community is preferred.
  • Experience with people experiencing homelessness preferred.
  • Knowledge of fund raising is preferred.
  • Previous board experience is preferred.
  • Previous volunteer experience is preferred.
  • Legal experience is a plus

  • There is nearly a two-year rotation of churches that host regularly and there are opportunities to seek hosts in additional communities on the Eastside.
  • More than 40 people have moved from Camp Unity to housing since Fall 2017.
  • There is a strong and growing community of church and other faith communities, businesses, nonprofits and individual supporters.
  • Camp Unity is financially well managed and is a 501(c)(3) IRS tax exempt charitable organization.
