Mission Statement

Darfur Women Network (DWN) is a 501c3 tax exempt, US based, Darfurian-led non-profit organization, whose mission is dedicated to working collectively with immigrants and survivors of genocide from Darfur in refugee camps to determine their needs and work together to fulfill their needs for recovery and transformation, based on the principle of education, awareness, and economic empowerment. Together we CAN make a difference!

Description

The DWN is the only women’s organization based in the USA that is dedicated to helping both Darfuri refugees residing within the US and displaced women and girls living in refugee camps overseas. DWN has witnessed how working collectively to end the suffering of these survivors creates enthusiasm among Darfuri people and their supporters
worldwide. Due to its regional connections, cultural understanding, and strong support and enthusiasm, the DWN believes its goals to protect and empower vulnerable refugee women and girls will not only be achieved, but will be duplicated in other refugee camps as well.

One of our many projects, 7,000 Safe Stoves for Darfur Refugee Mothers, has had a very positive impact already within the camp. To date, we have given away 202 safer stoves at no cost to the recipient families, over 50 of which are already being used to generate income for their families. With these stoves we are able to keep more women and girls within the camp, thus reducing their exposure to rape, abduction and murder, and helps with forest preservation due to the stoves using less wood.

Another step of this project will be planting over 600 trees to help replenish the forest around the refugee camp.Over 1200 family members will be directly impacted from this project, while also indirectly helping over 29,000 refugees in the camp. In January 2015, we will be distributing 100 more stoves, as well as training 20 refugee women on running a soap-making business, another income-generating project in place by DWN.

The first test for our College Prepartion for Disadvantaged Students Project will be in the Summer of 2015. This project helps provide disadvantaged students with the knowledge and ability to take the SAT test, thus allowing them the chance to get into their desired colleges and further their education.
