Department: Tifft Nature Preserve

Volunteer Job Title: Roving Greeter

Description: To be a friendly and helpful resource to our guests on the trails. Trail Buffs will walk around the preserve and either answers questions, point out interesting finds and assist guests finding their way.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Smile and greet visitors as you see them on the trail
  • Educate visitors about the preserve and our mission
  • Ensure that visitors adhere to preserve’s rules
    • No dogs
    • No bikes
    • Fishing on South and East shores of Lake Kristy only
    • Boardwalks closed
    • Stay on trails except to allow for proper distancing when passing
  • Answer visitors questions

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Pick up any trash on downtime that may be on the trails

Skills/Experience:

  • Public speaking skills
  • Must be able to be on feet for 2-3 hours at a time
  • Nature education (birds, insects and flowers) recommended but not required

Time commitment: Volunteer commitment minimum 3 months due to training

Founded in 1861, the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences has been collecting, studying and providing learning experiences for the people of the Greater Niagara Region for146 years. The Society carries its work out at several different locations throughout the region, including: The Buffalo Museum of Science, Tifft Nature Preserve, neighborhood-based community centers and other outreach locations.
