High School volunteers from Fowlerville are needed to be school-based mentors to children whose teachers have referred them for individualized one-on-one concentrated time. Typically, an hour in a half, each week after school, Mentors go to Kreeger Elementary from fall to spring to mentor a child. They talk about what is on the child's mind, work on a class assignment, and play in the gym. Their time together has a positive impact on the child's attitude about school and academic achievement, while putting a little fun and extra meaning into the volunteer's day and week.

Volunteers enroll through Mentor Livingston and complete a screening process which includes an interview, reference and background checks. After acceptance into the program, mentors receive an orientation to their local school and introduced to their mentee by professional staff. Regular support is available to assure that the relationship builds over time, and any logistical problems are resolved. Teachers report that children with mentors have an improved attitude toward school, better relationships with peer and adults, and improved academic performance.
