FRESH START CARING FOR KIDS FOUNDATION

Fresh Start Surgical Gifts (based in San Diego, California) teamed up with The Plastic Surgery Foundation to create Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation (FSCFKF) in Chicago. The mission of the organization is to transform the lives of disadvantaged infants, children, and teens suffering from physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease through the gift of reconstructive surgery and related healthcare services. In Fresh Start's 29-year history, more than 7,900 patients have received no-cost medical treatments valued at more than $42 million. The addition of the Chicago site is enabling the organization grow its patient base and outreach. The very first Chicago Surgery Weekend took place June 7-8, 2014 at The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital (the Chicago partnering hospital); five low-income children were provided with no-cost reconstructive surgeries. Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation covers the transportation costs to enable the patients to get to and from their Surgery Weekend appointments as well as the cost of lodging and food during the Surgery Weekends (if necessary). Surgery Weekends take place three times per year. Eighteen Surgery Weekends have taken place and 92 patients have been served in Chicago since June 2014.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Grant Writing and Individual Giving Volunteer - Chicago

ASSIGNMENT FOCUS

The Grant Writing and Individual Giving Volunteer provides key support in the areas of foundation, corporate, and community group grant research, writing, and reporting and securing funding from new individual donors. Duties are to be performed remotely. There will be regular check-in meetings with the National Director, which will be performed via telephone or a web-based platform. A minimum of a one-year commitment and between three (3) and five (5) hours of work per week are requested.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Researches foundation, corporate, and community group grant opportunities
  2. Writes grant letters of intent/inquiry (LOIs), proposals, and reports
  3. Researches and secures new individual gift donors
  4. Develops and implements donor engagement and stewardship activities
  5. Maintains records pertaining to the number of funding sources researched and when; LOIs, proposals, and reports submitted; contacts made; and the results of such efforts
  6. Extends a courteous, positive attitude and demonstrates cooperation while working with staff and key stakeholders
  7. Upholds the philosophy of Fresh Start and conducts activities in such a manner that the mission statement is reflected to the community
  8. Other duties as assigned by management
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Reports to the National Director
EDUCATION
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND REQUIREMENTS
  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful nonprofit grant writing experience is required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful nonprofit individual giving and major gifts experience is required.
  • Possess deep connections within the philanthropic community of the Chicago metropolitan area.
  • Be willing to master information pertaining to the FSCFKF Surgery Weekend Program and understand how to correctly and comfortably explain the dynamics of how the Program operates.
  • Understand the limits of his/her knowledge and be willing to defer to more knowledgeable staff when needed.
  • Respect each member of the staff and honor diversity.
  • Be able to balance work and personal lives.

Salary: This is an unpaid volunteer position.
