The United Nations Association of the USA, Northern New Jersey Chapter is a nonprofit, non- partisan, 501 (c)3 membership organization dedicated to building understanding of and support for the ideals and work of the UN among the American people. Its education, policy and advocacy programs emphasize the importance of cooperation among nations and the need for American leadership at the UN. Through discussions, partnerships, and action-oriented initiatives, UNA-NNJ offers its members a platform for education, advocacy, professional development in international affairs, and the opportunity to volunteer in international service. The group consists of diverse professionals from the fields of business, law, public service, healthcare and the media.

Peace and Security Committee

The Peace and Security Committee promotes the core principles of the UN concerning the peace and security of the global community. Through a series of events and mixers we aim to learn more about UN peace initiatives and examine US policies toward the UN's peace and security programs. Members may host events/ activities to honor the following international observances: International Day of Peace, International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, International Day of Democracy, and International Day of UN Peacekeeping.

There are numerous benefits to serving on the UNA-NNJ Board, including:

  • Establish yourself outside of your current workplace and interact with likeminded individuals

Responsibilities and Time Commitment

  • The UNA-NNJ board meets every other month to plan and report on activities for about 1-2 hours on a weekend afternoon (starting at 12 p.m. or 1:30 p.m.). Meetings are conducted in-person month and generally take place on the first Saturday of the month.
  • Board members are expected to participate, as appropriate, in discussions/decision-making process that takes place by e-mail in between monthly Board meetings.
  • Board Members are expected to attend at least half of the UNA NNJ Chapter events produced by fellow colleagues.
  • Board Members are expected to submit and present reports at monthly Board meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing of UNA-USA
  • Demonstrated interest in international affairs
  • Availability to carry out the duties of Committee Chair of the Peace and Security Committee as described above

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated interest in or experience with the United Nations or other multilateral organizations
  • Experience in board membership or other work with a non-profit organization

The Northern New Jersey Chapter covers the counties in the northern part of the state which include Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union, and Warren counties.
