Virtual English tutors will work adults to acquire conversational English skills and to use those skills to meet self-identified goals, such as job advancement.

Training:

Virtual English tutors are required to attend a training and onboarding with Program Coordination VISTA; participation in periodic in-service training sessions are volunteer but encouraged. The IRC will provide training, teaching materials, support and supervision of volunteer tutors.

The ELT volunteer serves as a tutor and resource for clients to acquire the English language skills necessary to live, work and eventually thrive in Wichita. The volunteer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Meet regularly with assigned individulals to work on English

  • Provide encouragement and support by:
  • 1. Helping students develop confidence and a positive attitute toward learnin by affirming their progress;
  • 2. Giving priase whenever the student is successful and being supportive rather than critical of mistakes
  • 3. Seeking to understand the psychological, emotional and physical problems that may cause a student to have difficulty learning
  • 4. Keep staff informed of situations in which referral to an outside agency is appropriate
  • Keep careful records of your tutoring hours, preparation hours and student's progress and report these on a monthly basis to the office.
  • Have fun!
  • Plan and execute appropriate lesson plans using IRC-approved curriculum and materials provided by Adult Education coordinator;
  • Reinforce English language learning through direct modeling and role-play, visual aids through projector display, and other materials as necessary;

  • Literate (but professional training is unnecessary)
  • Dependable and prompt
  • Patient and optimistic
  • Belief and commitment to IRC’s mission and vision.
Time Commitment:

IRC asks for a minimum commitment of 4-6 months although there is no time limit for volunteers.
