Lantern Community Services is a supportive housing organization that champions the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who are formerly homeless or have recently aged out of foster care. Lantern houses many families across several of our sites where we support parents and children through our programs, which have proven results in health, employment, education and life skills.

Typically, Lantern provides on-site tutoring to elementary and middle school scholars. However, due to COVID-19 safety measures, we are working to provide online one-on-one tutoring for scholars transitioning to online learning. Our educational directors on-site have worked to get students access to the technology and resources scholars need to complete their coursework. We are now looking for volunteer tutors who can remotely tutor scholars for 3-5 hours a week and help scholars continue their education until the end of the school year.

With the transition to online learning, it is as important as ever to get these scholars the support they need to continue their educational growth. We hope that you can help us through these changes and please contact us if you are interested or have any questions!

Mission Statement

Lantern Community Services champions the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who have been impacted by or threatened with homelessness, as well as those who have aged out of foster care.

Description

Lantern is home to more than 1,400 formerly homeless people who live in our 15 apartment buildings across New York City. We pioneered services for people living with HIV, and we are one of the largest providers for young adults who have aged out of foster care. We give people more than just basic support and a place to live, prioritizing interventions with scientifically proven results. We’ve grown our programs a lot recently, working creatively with our existing resources, but now we need volunteer power to bring more programs to more of our clients!
