Overview

The Hospital Advocate Volunteer will provide crisis intervention in a hospital/clinic atmosphere. Advocates will refer clients to community resources, help to make safety plans, present options, and provide emotional support to clients in need of services.

Purpose

Hospital Advocates enable Safehome to provide 24/7 support to clients who require the agency’s expertise and services. People who receive services from domestic violence organizations (like Safehome) are three times more likely to leave an abusive relationship.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assist clients in formulating safety plans
  • Ability to connect clients to community resources that best fit their needs
  • Provide emotional support
  • Practice excellent active listening skills
  • Have the ability to not impose personal trauma lens on a client’s situation
  • Ability to assess a client for appropriateness for shelter intake
  • Ability to calmly think and act in a way that is appropriate for the situation
  • Willingness to drive to hospitals during assigned shifts
  • Have the ability to listen and act nonjudgmentally to client circumstances
  • Ability to complete intake paperwork
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with clients at all times

Environment: Johnson County Medical Facilities, including, but not limited to: Olathe Medical Center, Overland Park Regional, Advent Health, Menorah Medical Center, St. Luke’s, various doctor’s offices, treatment facilities and clinics.

*Volunteers will be interviewed and trained during COVID-19 restrictions at area hospitals.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Volunteer must be available to cover 6 hours of calls/month (majority of shifts are overnight/early a.m.), additional call coverage would be ideal .  Must be able to respond to call anywhere in Johnson County within 45 minutes of being alerted.
