Migration Resource Center Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) provides low-income taxpayers with free representation before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), assists taxpayers in audits, appeals and collection disputes, and can help taxpayers respond to IRS notices. The taxpayer legal services intern will be responsible for supporting the clinic’s Qualified Tax Expert (QTE) in representing taxpayers and ensuring compliance with LITC program requirements. Primary responsibilities will include:
Conducting client intakes and attending consultations
Gathering supporting documents from clients
Maintaining the confidentiality of client records and tax information
Researching and analyzing federal and state tax laws
Assisting with calendar management
Attending LITC community events
Developing a comprehensive understanding of IRS policies and procedures, including but not limited to audit, appeal, and collection processes
Researching and drafting blog posts and articles relating to novel tax issues
Recent law school graduate or current law student
Experience with legal research and writing
Ability to build positive relationships with potential clients and colleagues
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively, yet independently
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suites (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint) and email applications
Commitment to serving low-income taxpayers
Able to commit 10-15+ hours/week for 3-4 months
The internship is unpaid; however, prospective interns are welcome to apply for academic credit through their institutions. Applications will be taken on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.
