Since the American Red Cross and other blood collection organizations put out a call for recovered COVID-19 patients to donate convalescent plasma, many have stepped up to help.
One of the first donors in the program was George Tzagournis, a dentist and family man with a wife and three children who are all college students at The Ohio State University. After a family vacation to Florida in March, George became ill and was eventually diagnosed with COVID-19. After several difficult weeks, he fully recovered.
When he became aware of a new initiative to help treat critically ill COVID-19 patients with plasma transfusions from donors who are fully recovered from the virus, he immediately signed up to help. Just a few days after registering to be a COVID-19 convalescent plasma donor, he was able to give his donation with the Red Cross on April 15.
"It’s a pretty easy thing to do for something that is so in need," George said. "Think about your own family and what you would want others to do to help you if you needed it."
Recovered COVID-19 patients who would like to participate in the program are encouraged to sign up at RedCrossBlood.org/Plasma4Covid .
