Image_202007151110

The Guanlan Scholarship Foundation since 2000 has been giving scholarship support to keep village girls in school through high school in one left-behind area of western China. Continued schooling empowers the girls to imagine wider horizons and take advantage of better living and work opportunities beyond small-scale farming, sex work or sweatshops. Better educated girls can take better care of themselves and their families and are better able to resist rampant sexist workplace abuses.

The Foundation has an updated website and a group presence on facebook, however needs active management and development on instagram. The Foundation is lead by its founder, Dr. Vilma Seeberg, and has a current enrolment of 40-50 young village girls, many who are rural to urban migrants, where they are undocumented and experience discrimination, poverty, and second-class education.

The Foundation welcomes also volunteers who can write Chinese to serve as penpals to the scholarship recipients, the Guanlan Sisters in China western China.

Mission Statement

Educate girls today and it will create lasting change for the next generation, one girl, one village at a time in left-behind China.

Description

Since 2000, the Foundation has collected funds to support scholarships for over 130 school girls in western China, where their opportunities are extremely limited.
The Foundation has a close relationship with a community-base partner organization in Shaanxi that qualifies up to 10 new Guanlan Sisters based on family need and distributes the scholarship annually.
The Foundation maintains records of each scholarship recipient's family need status and educational attainment. The scholarship recipients report in writing annually how they are progressing through school and what their specific needs are.
Dr. Seeberg, president, and team members of the Foundation visit with the scholarship recipients and their families to understand how their lives are developing, if they are safe, in school, or gainfully employed and otherwise doing well. We alsostay in touch with the Guanlan Sisters on various Chinese language social media platforms.
