Virtual Literacy Tutoring with BookNook

BookNook is back for the 21-22 school year!
Brilliant Detroit and our partner BookNook are offering virtual literacy tutoring to serve students 1st-3rd grade. The remote tutoring uses video conferencing and the BookNook digital literacy platform to provide time for students to connect with mentors and improve their literacy skills each week. Mentors lead students through pre-planned lessons that BookNook recommends based on students’ skill level and areas of need.
The school year session of the program begins on October 25th and runs until May 26th. We will be dividing the program into two cohorts. Volunteers and participants are welcome to participate in one or both cohorts. The first cohort will run from October 25th to December 16th and the second cohort will run from January 3rd to May 26th. The program observes holidays in accordance with the Detroit Public Schools calendar. We will send out a full program calendar to those volunteers who complete the program training.
We are looking for new mentors who can commit to meeting with a student twice a week during one of the time slots listed below. BookNook sessions run approximately 30-45 minutes. Please note that all Brilliant Detroit programs operate on Eastern Time.
- 4pm Mondays and Wednesdays
- 5pm Mondays and Wednesdays
- 4pm Tuesdays and Thursdays
- 5pm Tuesdays and Thursdays
In order to participate in the program, you must have access to wifi and technology (see list of compatible devices below), attend a one hour program orientation and complete a background check. We will send a list of the upcoming trainings when you respond to this post. We are also requiring that all volunteers attend a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Workshop. This new training is part of an initiative we are leading to become an anti-racist organization. You are not required to complete a DEI workshop before tutoring starts, however we ask that you do complete it within a month of starting. We will send more details about the DEI workshop in our post training email.
There are lots of devices that are compatible with BookNook, here’s the list (phones are NOT compatible): iPads(iOS 9.3+), Chromebooks (Chrome OS 54+), Android 4.4+, Mac (OS X 10+), PC (Windows 7+), Supported Fire Tablets: Kindle Fire HDX (2013 and 2014), Fire HD 8 and 10 (2015 - 2018)
