About NATIONAL CONSORTIUM FOR GRADUATE DGRS MINORITIES IN ENGINEERING

Location:

Mission Statement

GEM envisions a world where all are valued and empowered to achieve their fullest potential through parity of access to the US STEM workforce, driving global innovation and competitive advantage. That vision is pursued through our mission which is to enhance the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science. We identify technical leaders for advanced careers in industry, academic and government agencies by preparing and selecting highly qualified GEM Fellows to complete a program of graduate study and internships through our University and Corporate Members, Alumni, and other strategic partners. GEM develops funding to award Fellowships, create collaborative research opportunities and builds networks to support Fellows in achieving academic and professional success.

Description

Chartered in 1976, GEM is the only privately funded, non-profit graduate education organization connecting highly qualified minority graduate
students to a national network of more than 120 top-rated universities, government research facilities and leading multinational corporations.
GEM helps ensure student success in these competitive academic and professional environments with effective programs - including
graduate school application programs and guidance - that increase the retention and graduation rate of GEM Fellows. Our combination of graduate study and field-related internships make GEM Fellows more marketable and more competitive upon graduation. As such, employers looking for the best diversity candidates seek GEM.

Each year, GEM identifies and recruits more than 1,000 undergraduate students, graduate students and working professionals from these
underrepresented groups for admission to advanced degree programs at the nation’s top universities. Through three graduate Fellowship
tracks - Master of Science in Engineering, Ph.D. in Science and Ph.D. in Engineering - we provide them with much-needed financial support that is often the deciding factor in pursuing graduate education. In addition, all GEM Fellows work as paid summer interns while completing their graduate studies - a requirement that provides excellent career experience as well as opportunities for companies to assess and recruit talented employees.
