Mechanic - Career Mentor for Immigrant

Save to Favorites

ConnectOne matches adults with a community volunteer who can help them thrive.

We have a young adult in San Mateo who came from Mexico and aspires to be an mechanic. He would appreciate advice and guidance from a practicing mechanic.

Jose can meet in San Mateo or nearby. We would like to match him virtually for now, with the hope of one or several in-person meetings after the COVID-19 situation improves.

Please visit his ConnectOne profile page if you can help!

Details from his page:

Name: Jose
Reference #: 169

Seeking: An auto mechanic who can offer career thoughts & guidance

Communication preference: In-person
Estimated sessions: One meeting, then flexible depending on the volunteer’s availability
Available: Mon, Tue - after 5pm | Wed, Thur - before 5pm | Friday evenings
Place: San Mateo, Belmont (ideally at an auto shop)

Jose came to the U.S. from Mexico and wants to become an auto mechanic. He would like to meet a mechanic who can talk to him about the profession - anything from a one-time meeting to an ongoing mentorship.

He has basic knowledge of car maintenance (changing oil, tires, battery, etc.). He is enrolling in an automotive course at Skyline College.

If a volunteer is willing, he’d be glad to provide any type of assistance he can at an auto shop to gain the experience of the work environment.

More details:

Jose is friendly and currently works full-time in construction. He also takes advanced ESL classes at night to improve his English fluency.

Mission Statement

Enable adult volunteers to share knowledge, life skills, experience, & friendship with a motivated adult learner in our community looking for a little help. We are launching in San Mateo County in Spring 2020. Please preview our website now, and sign up for notifications or check back when we are ready in a few months!

"Volunteering made direct."

We match adult volunteers 1:1 with an adult who has a learning need & wants a little help. Our program is unique in that each learner is described directly on our website. By personalizing every need upfront, we hope to create great matches for limitless learning topics.

We're launching in 2020 by working with local adult schools. Their students are immigrants & low-educated adults who would appreciate meeting a volunteer outside the limited circles many of them have.

Our ultimate vision is to be an ongoing platform where any adult with a learning goal can ask for help from someone in the broader community. With the social & economic gaps in the bay area, we especially want to give a voice to people with a higher goal, but simply lack access to anyone who can help. And in doing so, we hope to inspire more volunteers with a transparent & easy process.

We hope to give people the chance to meet, work with, & better understand someone in a circle different from their own. By making these connections, our community improves, one person at a time.
