Name: Turabi
Seeking: Career thoughts & advice from a professional in apparel design

Communication preference: Zoom / WhatsApp (or similar video platform)
Estimated sessions: 1-2 meetings (with possible ad hoc follow-up, if volunteer is able)

Summary:

Turabi came to the U.S. 17 months ago. As he is currently learning English, he works in alterations at Nordstrom. He has deep industrial sewing knowledge from Turkey, and is hoping to possibly transition into an apparel design career in the future.

We are looking for a professional in the apparel industry who can offer knowledge and insights about such design careers, and the steps Turabi may want to consider for this.

Turabi is in the process of learning English, and is progressing well. We ask for a volunteer to be aware of this, and be able to explain and offer knowledge while speaking in English patiently and clearly.

More details:

Turabi worked in his family’s textile business in Turkey for many years. He has long-time professional sewing experience, with a concentration in women’s evening dresses. He also has a degree in chemistry in Turkey.

He is taking an intermediate English class and is wanting to improve quickly. He currently lives in the California bay area, and may consider relocating to pursue a career in design.

He is friendly, outgoing, and would very much appreciate the opportunity to talk to a professional in this field. Please let us know if you can help - thank you for considering!

Mission Statement

Enable adult volunteers to share knowledge, life skills, experience, & friendship with a motivated adult learner in our community looking for a little help.

Description

"Volunteering made direct."

We match adult volunteers 1:1 with an adult who has a learning need & wants a little help. Our program is unique in that each learner is described directly on our website.

By personalizing every need upfront, we hope to create great matches for limitless learning topics. And at the same time, we hope to inspire more volunteers with a transparent & easy process.

Our ultimate vision is to be an ongoing platform where any adult with a learning goal can ask for help from someone in the broader community. With the social & economic gaps in the bay area, we especially want to give a voice to people with a higher goal, but simply lack access to anyone who can help.

We hope to give people the chance to meet, work with, & better understand someone in a circle different from their own. By making these connections, our community improves, one person at a time.
