Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy, Inc.

  • 16 people are interested

SMART sits on a beautiful 23 acre horse farm -- we currently have 15 horses in our herd and three barns to maintain. We can always use assistance in taking care of the horses and barns -- early in the mornings or early in the evenings. Our horses are fed in their stalls twice a day, then spend much of the day in the pastures. Their feed buckets need to be cleaned after each meal, their water buckets always kept fresh and clean, and their stalls mucked out. The horses benefit from the tender care of volunteers who help groom, and occasionally wash them. Your reward as volunteers is contributing to healthy horses who will help our SMART riders who are facing life challenges -- physically, mentally, emotionally. We look forward to hearing from you.

Mission Statement

Mission Statement:

Enriching the lives of people with special needs through therapeutic horse-related programs.

"Empowering lives through the healing power of horses."

Horses are Empowering! At SMART, we strive to improve the quality of the lives of our SMART Riders and their families through therapeutic horseback riding, carriage driving and equine assisted activities. Through respectful partnerships with our horses, we create an environment that promotes a life of inclusion, respect, growth and independence.

At SMART, horseback riding and carriage driving lessons are provided on a weekly basis to both children and adults with a wide range of special needs (physical, mental, cognitive and/or emotional.) The students learn to groom and care for their horses as well as tack up and ride or drive their horses. This all encompassing horsemanship program gives each individual the opportunity to exercise their bodies, minds and spirits through therapeutic equine assisted activities. SMART is a Premier Center of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Int'l and a partner agency of the United Way of Manatee County. SMART is an ALL administered volunteer organization and has been providing services to the community for 27 years!
