This year celebrates 54 years since the first Earth Day in 1970. Earth Day is a time to reduce pollution by not using herbicides and pesticides and by not littering. It is a time to remember to improve our soil with mulch and compost, which aids in returning carbon to the earth and reduces water needs, making a difference in reducing the effects of climate change. It is a time to join with others to give back to the environment and sustain our planet. A Bioblitz to encourage the community to engage in observing their environments during Earth Week, a Garden Tour on Earth Day, and various speakers, exhibits, and activities on Earth Day are some of the events to help in planning and publicizing.

At PHIG the restoration of an abandoned site into a wildlife habitat garden uses only sustainable practices, including planting of mostly natives and drought tolerant plants. Contact us for exact dates and times to help, including during Earth Week. Please email phigarden@gmail.com for more information, directions and a map to the garden.

About Pleasant Hill Instructional Garden

Location:

PO BOX 23454, PLEASANT HILL, CA 94523, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the Pleasant Hill Instructional Garden
is to educate students, staff, and community members on the need for water conservation
and to promote wildlife habitat with a demonstration garden using mulch, drought-tolerant and native plantings and without pesticide use.

Description

Our vision is to build PHIG into a community recognized resource with a water conservation demonstration garden. A community eyesore is being transformed into a natural and beautiful wildlife habitat that attracts birds, beneficial insects, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Begun in 2007, PHIG provides a living laboratory for all students and specifically for students at the Pleasant Hill Education Center and Contra Costa County Master Gardeners. PHIG uses no pesticides that degrade our water quality and is also simply a place to sit and enjoy nature.

Community service and garden work parties help to maintain, renew and develop the garden. Join us in the garden or help us in other ways!
