Green Iowa AmeriCorps is working with Corteva and Habitat for Humanity to maintain the Birdland Park Pollinator Garden!

The Birdland Park Pollinator garden is located at 206 E Holcomb Ave, Des Moines, IA 50313. It was installed in the summer of 2019 and functions as a retention pond for the Birdland Park Pocket neighborhood. Habitat for
Humanity collaborated with Corteva Agriscience to install a pollinator garden, turning a mundane necessity into a beautiful home for native species.

Each day we will begin with a brief meeting to go over the tasks for the day and make sure that everyone is familiarized with which plants are weeds and which are pollinator plants. We will provide all tools needed and have gloves on hand if you don't have your own pair. All you'll need to do is bring your own water bottle and dress for the weather!

Tasks in the garden may include:

  • Removing weeds and invasive species
  • Plant Identification
  • Mulching
  • Watering
  • Spreading seeds

We will be working out at the garden throughout the spring and summer on:

  • May 22nd 10am-2pm
  • May 23rd: 11am - 1pm
  • May 28th: 9am - 12pm
  • May 29th 10am-2pm
  • June 3rd: 10am - 2pm
  • June 5th 10am - 2pm
  • June 6th 11am-1pm
  • June 12th 10am - 2pm
  • June 13th 11am - 1pm
  • June 19th 10am - 2pm
  • June 20th: 11am - 1pm
  • June 26th: 10am - 2pm
  • June 27th 11am - 1pm
If you're interested in helping out please send us an email at greeniowaDM@gmail.com. We will likely be working at the garden more days than are posted, so if there is a different date/time that you are available please reach out to see if we can make it work.

About Green Iowa AmeriCorps - Des Moines

Location:

2200 E Euclid Ave, Des Moines, IA 50317, US

Mission Statement

Helping make Iowans more energy efficient through low-impact home weatherization, energy education, and community outreach.

Description

Operated through the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education, and hosted by Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a program founded upon the increasing need for energy and environmental improvement and education.

Concieved in 2009, Green Iowa's initial purpose was to increase the sustainable use of energy and environmental resources in several Iowa communities struggling to rebuild from the devastating floods of 2008. Since the start of the flood recovery, Green Iowa has been an active community partner; members are trained as energy auditors to contribute to a comprehensive home energy plan, allowing the program to offer home energy audits and weatherization at no cost to property owners. Other community involvement includes deconstruction, rehab, and repurpose projects; creating energy and environmental education programs for all ages; and developing and facilitating environmental and energy related events.

As of this year, we now have seven sites spread throughout Iowa in Black Hawk, Dubuque, Johnson, Jefferson, Linn, Polk, and Winneshiek counties.
