Help the Central Texas Food Bank feed fellow Texans in need during COVID-19

By taking food directly to clients, our mobile food pantries fill geographic and service gaps in emergency food assistance by providing Central Texans in need with basic staples, fruits and vegetables, and frozen foods where local food assistance services cannot keep up with demand. Asking for help can be the hardest thing our clients have to do, and a welcoming face and a kind word from a volunteer can make a world of difference. We rely on volunteers to make Mobile Pantries happen.

Volunteers help unload food and tables from our trucks, set up and break down the distribution, assist clients through the distribution line and bring groceries to the car for clients who need assistance. This is an outdoor event.

You must be 8 years or older to volunteer for this opportunity. All minors must be accompanied by an adult age 21+.

This is a rain or shine volunteer opportunity; however, in the event of inclement weather, we will immediately update our Mobile Pantry hotline - 512-684-2559. Please call this number prior to heading to your shift to get the latest information about any closures or delays.

If you are feeling ill or have possibly been exposed to a communicable disease (regardless of how you feel) we ask you to cancel your volunteer registration.

In the case of COVID-19 (coronavirus), please do not come in to volunteer if you are currently sick or have been exposed to someone who is sick or someone who is self-quarantining.

While we greatly appreciate your interest in volunteering, the safety of our volunteers, staff and clients is of paramount importance to us.

Mission Statement

engAGE Travis County provides pathways to aging well for people 50+, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through volunteering, education, advocacy, and partnerships with public agencies and community organizations.

Description

One of our core programs, RSVP is part of the federal AmeriCorps Seniors program and was founded locally in 1972. Last year more than 17,100 Americans of all ages and backgrounds united to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and expand opportunity through national service in Texas. AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers served at more than 2,400 locations across Texas, including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations.

Those who benefit from the work performed by engAGE Travis County and RSVP volunteers include the full spectrum of people from birth to old age, including homeless or isolated people with acute, chronic or terminal illnesses; frail homebound seniors; low-income families; teen mothers; disaster victims; at-risk youth; veterans; people with physical, mental or learning disabilities; and seniors in nutrition programs.

Help your community by offering your unique skills and talents. We’ll recommend ongoing and short-term volunteer opportunities based on your skills and interests, but the choice of where you volunteer and what you do is entirely yours. The benefits of being a volunteer (aged 50 and over) are numerous: travel reimbursement, on-duty accident and liability insurance, life-long learning opportunities, social engagement, recognition, and greetings throughout the year.
