Volunteers are the lifeblood of Trident Literacy and provide essential services to our organization, our students, and the community. In the last fiscal year at TLA, 147 volunteers contributed approximately 9,000 hours, valued at over $230,000.

Per CDC guidelines, Trident Literacy will be re-opening our facilities in the Fall of 2021 for vaccinated tutors and students only. Non-vaccinated tutors/students can easily participate virtually.

** Teaching/tutoring experience preferred but certainly not required.

Basic GED preparation includes the following subjects: basic mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. Life skills, work skills and financial literacy are also included. Volunteers generally host 2 or 3 virtual sessions per week, tutoring, mentoring and/or keeping their students on track. Each session averages 1.5 hours and can be either one-to-one or a small group.

**Replies are typically within 24 hours from receipt of application. Please check your spam folder if you have not heard back from us.

"Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless."

Mission Statement

The mission of Trident Literacy is to help adults reverse the cycle and impact of generational poverty and illiteracy through the acquisition of vital life skills. With over 80,000 adults in the Tri-county who don't have a high school credential, Trident Literacy is changing lives everyday. Trident Literacy's objective for the past 47 years has been to raise awareness of adult illiteracy and the crucial impact it has on a family. To fulfill the mission of TLA, we need donors, volunteers, community supporters and literacy lovers to help these students fulfill their goals and dreams. Description

From GED programs to English as a Second Language (ESL) to computer skills training, we offer a variety of individualized and small group instruction for adults- all designed to help our clients excel in life.

Trident Literacy Association is headquartered in North Charleston on Rivers Avenue. Our other locations are in Goose Creek (205 N Goose Creek Blvd) and Downtown Charleston at 20 Mary St. at the Shaw Community Center. ESL classes are at the Rivers Avenue site only. Hours are Monday - Thursday 9am - 8pm. Small group classes for GED are available M - TH mornings and Monday and Wednesday evenings. ESL meets M - TH, offering day classes as well as evening classes.

ESL students meet in various small group settings with a tutor. Currently, classes are offered online.

All GED students are pre-tested to determine instructional needs. Students are then provided study materials and are assigned a tutor, in either individual, one on one settings or a small group. GED classes are currently available online as well.

Our students seek to increase their literacy skills, pass the GED exam, earn WIN Ready to Work certificates, go on to higher education or continuing education, apprenticeship programs, the military or the job market. They also learn soft skills to assist in job seeking, to function well in their community as well as in their current job and they strive to achieve economic independence.
