Work with incarcerated individuals (ages 18 & up) to develop their writing in various directions through providing them with a wealth of ideas and strategies for creating new concepts. Teach them to expand their powers of observation and imagination in hopes of producing pieces of literature that will come to life on the page. Provide them with information about a range of writers and different types of creative writing.

As part of the criminal justice system, the New York City Department of Correction is dedicated to enhancing public safety by maintaining a safe and secure environment for our staff, while providing inmates with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities.

Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) provides for the care, custody, and control of persons accused of crimes or convicted and sentenced to one year or less of jail time.

The Department manages 12 inmate facilities, 9 of which are located on Rikers Island. In addition, the Department operates two hospital Prison Wards (Bellevue and Elmhurst hospitals) and court holding facilities in each borough.

During Fiscal Year 2016, the Department handled over 63,000 admissions and managed an average daily inmate population of approximately 9,790 individuals.
Our dedicated workforce of both uniformed and non-uniformed staff members represent the city’s BOLDEST.

  • Volunteers must maintain regular attendance based on agreed-upon schedule. Volunteer should be able to offer a minimum of one hour per week between the hours of 1-9 pm.
  • Relevant experience facilitating creative writing workshops.
