2022 Spring Tutoring Plan

Our tutoring program, serving PreK-12th grade students in math and reading, will start on January 25 and will be virtual through May 14, 2022. Sessions will be available between 4 - 6 pm Tuesdays through Fridays as well as Saturdays from 9 am, 10am and 11am session. You DO NOT need to be available during all of these times, rather you will choose 1 or more hours within this time frame to tutor weekly. We require students and tutors to sign up for regular, weekly schedules if they want to be a part of a permanent pairing. This means that rather than sign up for any sessions you are available each week, you will be paired with one or more students whom you will work with at the same times each week for the entire Spring semester.

If you would rather tutor less regularly, you can choose to be a floater tutor! Floater tutors act as substitutes when a student’s permanent tutor cannot come to a scheduled session. Once we know a student needs a tutor for a certain session, we will reach out to our floater tutors based upon the availability and school-level preference given on the tutor training form. We will email, text, or call you in the event that we need a floater tutor, and we will let you know the time and date of the session. If you are available and want to tutor then, we will sign you up and give you access to that student’s login information.

Zoom Meetings

We'll be using Zoom video conferencing for tutoring. At the top of each hour, tutors and students will come together using a link we will send out beforehand. Everyone will join one video call, then be split into pairs in digital "breakout rooms." Tutoring Coordinators will bounce around each "room" and check in on each pair. Zoom has amazing features like screen-sharing, so tutors will be able to see students' screens, and a digital whiteboard. If this is overwhelming to you, fear not: we are here to help if you'd like support in figuring out video conferencing technology.

Curriculum

We provide Khan Academy, ReadWorks, and Native Language Literacy activities, as well as many others, for you to work on with your students. If you work with a student in PreK through 3rd grade, we will provide all the materials to do our Early Literacy Initiative with them. You can fill an important role in helping them strengthen what they learned last school year and stay on top of new material they’re learning during this challenging time.

Early Literacy Initiative!

The Early Learning Initiative is a program where students in PreK through 3rd grade work with their regular tutor on letter sound recognition, letter formation, word recognition, and reading fluency. If you prefer to work with a PreK through 3rd grade student you will be trained in our Early Literacy Initiative, based on the Orton-Gillingham teaching method, and learn teaching skills that can help you improve the literacy of any child.

Tutor Form

All tutors must complete our LSF Spring 2022 Tutor Form - please copy and paste to the browser (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfT8MaI8bZCOY789FhuTY-6ovAjo4rRKdZC4srl5hCWpO3EdA/viewform). The form contains MANDATORY training in Khan Academy, ReadWorks, and our Native Language Literacy initiative, as well as Early Literacy Initiative training for those working with students in PreK through 3rd grade. This Spring, we will be using several programs during our tutoring sessions, including Khan Academy, ReadWorks, and Duolingo or Quizlet. Students and tutors should be using these materials during the tutoring session, so it’s important that you understand how to use all of the programs. You will need to complete the form by answering a questionnaire, watching the training videos, and completing a brief quiz. If you are planning to work with a student between the grades of PreK through 3rd grade, the entire form will take about two hours to complete due to the Early Literacy component. If you would prefer to work with a student in 4th grade or above, the form will take about an hour to complete.

As mentioned previously, the form contains training videos that are MANDATORY to watch in order to tutor with us this Spring. Please ensure you have adequate time to complete it when you start the form. We will match students and tutors on a rolling basis; if you turn in the form after all of our students have been matched with permanent tutors, we will ask you to be a floater and fill in when we need substitutes. If you would like to watch the videos before beginning the form, to save time, you can access the videos here on our LSF Tutor Resource Padlet (https://padlet.com/lsftutoring/lsfvirtualtutoringresources)

If you have never tutored with us before, please make an account on https://www.givepulse.com/ group/199575-Latino-Student- Fund and sign up for an orientation session. We ask that you complete this process to receive upcoming program tutor/volunteer information. We ask that you complete the LSF Spring 2022 Tutor Form BEFORE attending the orientation.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out! You can reach us at tutoringpgc@latinostudentfund. org or (202) 716-7527.

we look forward to seeing you soon!

With gratitude,
