ORGANIZATION: Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project

Throughout Seattle, you've likely noticed Real Change vendors working hard to sell the award-winning weekly newspaper to their regular customers and passersby. Yet, due to COVID-19, foot traffic in Seattle has all but vanished and regular customers are few and far between. As a result, the income that Real Change Vendors earned from newspaper sales and depended upon for food and basic necessities, has become dangerously low.

Vendors experiencing homelessness amid this deadly pandemic need reliable access to food, water, and everyday necessities. With the compassion and support from volunteers like you, you can make a tremendous impact on the day-to-day lives of Real Change Vendors.

It's easy! Choose any of the below projects to join and email volunteer@realchangenews.org to get started:

  • Start an Online Food Drive! Organize a food drive among friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, and more! We'll provide a list of urgently-needed items to collect, as well as our Target Wish List , and you'll lead the way by inviting others to participate and donate via social media, email, etc. All donations can be mailed directly to our office for immediate distribution: Real Change, 219 1st Ave. S., Suite 220, Seattle, WA 98104.
  • Browse our Target Wish List! Head to our Target Wish List (tgt.gifts/realchangegroceries) , or the online store of your choice, to donate non-perishable food items without ever leaving your computer! Our Wish List is set up to deliver all items you order directly to our office for immediate distribution to Real Change Vendors.
  • Next time you're grocery shopping, think of us! During your next trip to the grocery store, use the Grocery List we provide to add items to your cart for vendors. We'll schedule a drop-off date/time at our Seattle office that works for your schedule.
  • Cook! M ake individual meals for vendors and schedule a drop-off at our office in Pioneer Square, Seattle. We recommend dropping-off no more than 50 meals off at a time, but less is also great and so appreciated! Popular meals have included: sack lunches, individually wrapped burritos, or your choice of meals/sides packaged in disposable to-go containers - this could be anything from BBQ to spaghetti and meatballs, or a recipe you've been waiting to try.
