Mission Statement

Repair the World mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world, igniting a lifelong commitment to service. We believe service in support of social change is vital to a flourishing Jewish community and an inspired Jewish life. By 2030, Repair will inspire and catalyze one million acts of service towards repairing the world. Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods in various cities including Pittsburgh. In most communities, a City Director supports a cohort of fellows (ages 21-26) who make a two year-long service commitment to Repair the World. During this experience, Repair’s fellows work closely with local nonprofits to create authentic and impactful volunteering and education opportunities--and they use peer-to-peer outreach and recruitment to engage thousands of other young adults in volunteering and learning.

Description

Repair the World Pittsburgh was founded in 2013 to mobilize Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world. Repair the World is driven by authentic local engagement and a deep commitment to creating meaningful service opportunities that meet real needs. We work to build relationships, show up with long-time friends and neighbors, and address local needs including food justice, education justice, and more through service based in Jewish values. Repair the World mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world.

Repair the World: Pittsburgh will be working with partners to organize one-time and ongoing service opportunities around the issues of:

  • Food Justice
  • Education Justice
  • Racial Justice

Our partner organizations include Assemble, Circles East Liberty, Open Hand Ministries, Higher Achievement, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Just Harvest, Grow Pittsburgh and 412 Food Rescue. We also work with other organizations which include Friendship Circle, the Jewish Association of Again, Free Store 15104, the Jewish Federation, Bend the Arc: Pittsburgh, Sankofa Village Community Garden, BUGS Monticello St. Garden, and Garfield Community Farms.

We are all about putting the "why" in volunteering. We believe that meaningful social action involves volunteering, and understanding the issues we’re addressing and the positive change we are working towards.
