Virtual Volunteerism

At Operation Gratitude, our volunteers are the heartbeat of what we do at Operation Gratitude. With over 3.5 million Care Packages sent since 2003, we couldn’t accomplish our mission without the support of grateful Americans across the country. We invite you to join us on the journey to say thank you to all who serve through special service projects you can complete from anywhere! Below are ways you can contribute to our signature Care Packages:

Letter Writing - Writing a letter is a meaningful way for Americans to show support for all who serve. It only takes five minutes of your day but will bring lasting joy to the recipients.

Paracord Lanyards - By taking the time to craft a paracord lanyard, you are providing a hero with a tangible, lasting expression of your gratitude, and a symbol of the appreciation of grateful Americans everywhere.

Handmade with Love - In the cold winter months, we include a lovingly handmade scarf or hat in every Care Package we send to the troops. To make that happen, we need the knitting and crocheting talents of volunteers across the country. Our Handmade with Love volunteers also make greeting cards for service members to send hand-crafted cards to loved ones while on deployment as well as small crocheted or knitted items such as flying discs and amigurumi figures. Whether you’re an expert crafter or just starting out, we have a project for you!

Collection Drives - Our Care Packages are filled with donated items from grateful Americans and corporations. Show your support for our heroes by organizing a collection drive in your community and help create "the best Care Packages ever."

Mission Statement

Honor the service of our Military and First Responders by creating opportunities to express gratitude.

Description

After 9-11, founder Carolyn Blashek was compelled to join the military to serve our Country. Past the age of enlistment, she began volunteering at a military lounge at the Los Angeles International Airport. In March 2003, a service member came into the office and broke down at her desk. He was on leave from a war zone for his mother’s funeral, his wife had left him, and his only child had died as an infant-he had no one else in his life.

"I’m going back over there; I know I won’t make it back this time, but it really doesn’t matter because no one would even care," he told her. Right then, Blashek realized that when bullets are flying, troops must believe that someone at home cares about them as an individual. That’s when Operation Gratitude was born.

While this grassroots movement started in Blashek’s living room, it now encompasses Americans all over the country donating items and writing letters to all who serve.

Today, Operation Gratitude has sent over 3.5 million Care Packages around the world with the help of grateful Americans like you.
