Organizational Impact: Shelters across the country are expecting to experience overcrowding, economic hardships, and staff shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This position increases the organization’s ability to continue to provide critical services to shelter partners, local pet owners, and sanctuary animals.

Position Function/Goals/Deadlines:

  • Provides extra support for the care of animals in the medical department.
  • Assists the veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants with animal care duties

Goals:

  • Provide support for the medical care of patients in the hospital or satellite areas as needed
  • Provide the volunteer with a good understanding of the veterinary clinic in a sanctuary/shelter setting

Time Commitment and Location of Work:

  • 4-8 hours per day; minimum of 3 days per week up to 5 days per week; 5-day commitment would be ideal, but not required.
  • Locations: Main Clinic, Satellite clinics located in Dogtown, Cat World, large animal areas, Parrots and Rabbits as needed.

Core responsibilities:

  • Act as liaison between Veterinarians (internal and external), Clinic Management, owners/animal care staff regarding the health, status, and welfare of all patients.
  • Have medical skills associated with all aspects of hospitalized patients: following treatment sheets, recognizing and communicating changes in patient status, common and specialized diagnostic procedures, administration of treatments (injectable and oral medications, bandage care, basic physical therapy exercises).
  • Have surgical skills associated with all aspects of surgical patients: sterile technique, assisting the veterinarian intra-operatively, surgical induction, preparation for surgery, postoperative recovery care, recognizing anesthetic complications, and perioperative monitoring.
  • Perform husbandry, triage, phlebotomy, lab work, IV catheter placement, radiology, ultrasound, wound management/bandaging, fluid maintenance, injectable and oral medication administration, laser treatment, intubation/extubation, monitoring and maintenance of anesthesia,, etc.
  • Perform solely or in conjunction with a Senior Technician/Veterinarian special procedures including: chemotherapy, blood transfusions, maintaining feeding tubes/chest tubes/urinary catheters, dentals, critical care of medical and surgical patients, physical therapy, euthanasia.
  • Perform above medical skills while following strict quarantine/Isolation protocols
  • Perform laboratory testing and basic interpretation: cbc, chemistry panels, T4, urinalysis/fecal analysis (multiple species), ear cytology, PT/PTT, blood smears, facilitate outside lab work, etc.
  • Have a working knowledge of medical conditions, terminology, transcription and data entry.
  • Track and input hours worked into the Best Friends volunteer database.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Prior experience working in a Veterinary clinic or prior experience as a Veterinary Technician, or relevant education and or certifications.
  • Able and willing to adhere to clinic standards for anesthesia, sterility, surgical technique, and medical record-keeping.
  • Able to understand and adhere to all safety rules.
  • Able to remain calm and focused during emergent situations.
  • Demonstrates initiative to listen to instructions, ask questions to clarify if needed, and ensure that tasks are carried out correctly.
  • Positive attitude and enjoys working with other volunteers and staff.
  • Able to communicate effectively through oral and written communication.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to lift and handle animals of varying sizes and species, bending, stooping, and walking on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor. Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, hike, walk, kneel, and lift.

A daily stipend will be offered toClinic Volunteer Veterinarians ($450/day) & Clinic Volunteer Veterinary Technicians ($150/day).

Due to the current situation, we are asking that any travel to the Sanctuary is done by personal vehicle. Cost of gas to & from Kanab will be reimbursed. Lodging will be provided.
