ORGANIZATION: The Salvation Army - San Francisco, CA

Food Pantry Volunteer

In the COVID-19 crisis, The Salvation Army is continuing to provide (and even increase) the essential services we provide to ensure people have their basic needs such as distributing food, providing or assisting to find shelter, homeless services and shelter, rehabilitation services, etc. We are to continue these activities, being careful to take personal protection precautions for ourselves, our staff and volunteers.

The Salvation Army Redwood City Corps Community Center is increasing its food pantry during the COVID-19 emergency.Volunteers are urgently needed to help packaging fresh/frozen food for distribution at our Redwood city location to those in need in our community. We anticipate we will be providing these services through July 2020.

Most emergency food services in the Redwood City area have temporarily ceased. Therefore, The Salvation Army is expecting a significant increase in people served through our regular emergency food pantry program.

Distribution takes place Tuesday-Thursday (9am to 11am) at our Redwood City location. 2-3 volunteers are urgently needed to package fresh or frozen food for distribution as clients come into our emergency food pantry. Volunteers will NOT have access to clients and will only handle food. Our staff will make the distribution.

Proper social distancing and hygiene measures will be in place. Volunteers and clients will be expected to comply with these measures and self-monitor for and stay away if they are ill.

Mission Statement

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human need in His name without discrimination.

Description

The Salvation Army was established in London in 1865, and since 1883 has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area, offering practical support, spiritual comfort and a critical safety net to people in need. The safety net is funded in part by donations from the Red Kettle Campaign which started in San Francisco in 1891. Nearly 600,000 San Franciscans receive assistance from the Army annually through a range of social services; clothing and shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry, opportunities for underprivileged children, alcohol rehabilitation, transitional housing, nutritional and housing support for seniors and relief for disaster survivors. For every dollar donated to The Salvation Army, 82 cents is used to support those services in the 16 facilities throughout San Francisco and South San Francisco communities.
