During the summer, we want to help Front Runners avoid the infamous "summer slide:" when students forget information they learned the school year before. Summer Reading Tutors and students (ages PreK-high school) are matched by BLC staff and meet once a week for the months of June and July to increase kids’ literacy, expand their vocabulary, and enjoy reading stories together aloud. Tutoring takes place in the child’s home, with a parent present. This opportunity is for volunteers aged 18+. Bilingual welcomed, but not required.
BLC staff will attend the first tutoring session to introduce everyone, go over safety guidelines and expectations, and help volunteer-student pair set goals for the next 2 months. Whenever possible, the tutor should involve the parents in the tutoring activities.
