Seeking:
Volunteers work alongside rangers to welcome visitors to the National Parks of Boston at the Faneuil Hall Visitor Center in downtown Boston

About the Park:
The National Parks of Boston consists of three units located within the greater Boston area. These sites are rich in natural and cultural history and include Faneuil Hall, Charlestown Navy Yard, and the Boston Harbor Islands.

About Faneuil Hall:
Faneuil Hall is an historic meeting place and market, built in 1742, with ties to the American Revolution, abolitionist movement, and other American social movements. The purpose of our visitor center is to greet and provide information about the park, park programs, information about the local area, and Freedom Trail sites.

Duties and Work Environment:
Work will consist of assisting rangers at Faneuil Hall on specific days and specific shifts.
Duties include:

  • Answering questions from the public
  • Providing clear verbal instructions and printed information as needed
  • Helping visitors plan their trip on the freedom trail
  • Informing visitors about programs and events
  • Giving general park orientation
Additional support tasks include gathering materials needed for public distribution, learning basic history about Faneuil Hall and Boston, and alerting rangers of any visitor service needs or issues that may arise.

Qualifications and Physical Requirements:
Previous experience is not required, but prior customer service training is helpful. A willingness to work as part of a team, with a variety of partners is essential. Volunteers should enjoy working with the public and be able to keep their composure in stressful and distracting situations.

Volunteers must be able to commit to a regular schedule, be willing to learn about the park, freedom trail sites, and nearby attractions. Attendance at one park-held training session is required, additional training will be provided at the work site. The work is performed primarily at the Faneuil Hall visitor center located on the entry level in a busy market area.

In this setting volunteers should expect regular and frequent contact with a high level of visitors. Rangers and volunteers are not confined to a desk, although kiosk and chairs are provided. The work involves standing for long periods of time and, on occasion, light lifting.

Time commitment:
A minimum commitment of 4 hours per week is required.

Visitor Contacts and attendance at one park-held training session are required, date and time to be announced.

Shifts are as listed below:
*Friday 11:00AM - 2:00PM
