This is the listing for anyone interested in helping us maintian our park. Occasionally, we have our maintenance crews work on the restoration of historic passenger cars and even a few qualified machinists who help restore the locomotives themselves. Experience in metalwork, carpentry, automotive repair, aviation, is all a plus.
Note: The most common workday for maintenance and restoration is on Thursdays, 9-3PM.
Please fill out an application and meet with volunteer coordinator before attending; all volunteer applicants will eventually require a LiveScan criminal background check, and approval by all supervisors. Additionally, any project undertaken at Railtown requires approval by supervisors. Training is required before working on the historic equipment, particularly for the steam locomotive themselves, and all work on historic artifacts must be approved by park curator and our park supervisor.
10:00 AM to 03:00 PM
Every Thursday our maintenance volunteers meet at the park. Restoration projects are also assigned on occasion.

About Railtown 1897 State Historic Park
10501 Reservoir Rd., Jamestown, CA 95327, US
The purpose of Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, in Tuolumne County, is to preserve and protect intact, an integrated complex of authentic structures and examples of the type of historic rolling stock and other railroad equipment once used by a typical short-line railroad of the late nineteenth century. The park provides the public with direct experiences of this aspect of the history of California transportation by observing historic railroading skills and operations, and by undertaking extensive steam train excursions through the Sierra Nevada foothill landscape.
Our park represent a unique opportunity for volunteers---where else can you be trained to operate a functioning historic steam excursion railway? We have many entry-level positions that, with the training we provide, you can work your way into becoming an engineer, conductor, or even restoration and maintenance specialist.
To run a railroad, however, there are many people needed in many different positions, some of which focus on good customer service. These positions include: Greeters, Car Hosts, Tour Guides, Deck Interpreters, Ticket Agents, Stationmasters, and hospitality service.
Train crews generally start off working on fire patrol, but with further training, can work as an engineer, brakeman, fireman, or even restoration specialists. If you like beautiful old trains, we will have a spot where you can help. Please help us keep this magical history of steam alive for future generations.
